The first step in solving a problem is truly identifying it. And while it's no secret that greenhouse gasses are not good for the environment, no automaker has yet come forward to specify how much it's producing... Until now, that is. Honda has now become the first automaker to fully close all of its greenhouse-gas emissions across all sources.
All sources?
That's right, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Resources Institute for Greenhouse Gas Accounting have set a standard for measuring greenhouse gas output. Known as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, it divides emissions into three scopes:
- Scope one is emissions from production
- Scope two is indirect emissions from electricity to power factories
- Scope three is the emissions caused by a company's product
Honda estimates that it produces a carbon dioxide equivalent of 225.06 million metric tons of greenhouse gasses from all three scopes. This certainly isn't the cheeriest number to hear, but it is one that many other automakers aren't even considering disclosing just yet. And the fact that Honda is actively trying to reduce this number with the development of models like the 2013 Honda Fit EV speaks volumes of its commitment to environmental responsibility.
With that, we here at East Coast Honda hopes that you'll stay tuned to our blog for more on what Honda is doing to lower its greenhouse gas emissions. Moving forward, everyone at 225 Bala Avenue Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004 be keeping a close eye on this initiative and promise to update out blog the moment we know anything more.
