Certainly older readers of our blog will have fond memories of spending warm summer nights sitting in their cars at a drive-in movie. Watching a double feature from the driver's seat is an American institution it is a shame to see so many of these fixtures of American culture going out of business, and sadly it looks like many more have the same destiny since Hollywood studios plan to stop distributing 35mm film reels at the end of this year.
Most drive-in theaters have used the same 35mm projectors, for decades and now the switch to digital projectors is coming and many of these mom and pop venues just don't have the money to purchase this new technology. That is where Honda comes in.
A new effort called Project Drive-In has our favorite Japanese automaker ready to purchase five drive-in movie theaters new digital projectors which cost nearly $75,000. Movie fans are being asked to vote on which theaters should get Honda's assistance by casting a vote at www.projectdrivein.com
Alicia Jones, manager of Honda and Acura Social Marketing, commented, "Cars and drive-in theaters go hand-in-hand, and it's our mission to save this decades-old slice of Americana that holds such nostalgia for so many of us."1
